An integrated operating room (OR) data system provides simplified access to visual insights, facilitating a more coordinated patient continuum of care.

The Olympus Medical (Olympus; Tokyo, Japan) EasySuite 4K is a next generation scalable platform that integrates data from legacy, high definition (HD), and 4K ultra-high definition (UHD) medical sources, built on a 10GB IP standards-based switching backbone with enterprise-grade security features. The system enables OR surgical and interventional clinicians to connect with both native and uncompressed sources to streamline and adapt pre-, intra-, and post-operative clinician workflows for each care team member, when and where they need it.

This allows OR staff in any procedure room, including interventional X-ray, trauma bays, catheterization labs, electrophysiology labs, and more, to collaborate with their colleagues and focus on the patient care, not the technology. EasySuite 4K also provides enterprise-grade data security and virus protection to safeguard patient privacy and ensure compliance. As it is workflow-based, it enables staff to take a surgical “time-out” with the push of a button, access relevant patient images from previous procedures and specialties, and download surgical images seamlessly to the electronic medical record (EMR).

EasySuite 4K also provides a relaxing patient experience prior to surgery with a patient greeting system, delivering soothing images and sounds with separate settings for adults and pediatrics. Clinicians can also consult virtually with colleagues during a surgical case in an interactive, collaborative, environment via the Image Stream Medical (ISM; Littleton, MA, USA) MedPresence suite, which provides a rich, interactive experience combining video, audio, and relevant contextual imagery and information, with shared control and real-time telestration input. ISM is a wholly owned subsidiary of Olympus Medical.

“The ability to capture, route, and view images across the continuum of care through EasySuite 4K will not only improve a clinician's productivity, but also a patient's experience,” said Todd Usen, President of Olympus Medical Systems Group. “Through EasySuite 4K, we believe the advancement in 4K cameras, microscopes, and surgical displays can now play an even greater role in supporting precision surgery. We are excited to set a new standard in system integration and develop products that help clinicians glean insights from high-resolution images to better consult, diagnose and treat patients.”

“The benefit to the customer is a streamlined workflow not only in the OR, but also across the entire health care ecosystem. The ability to capture, route, and view high-fidelity visual insights across the continuum of care will not only improve a clinician’s productivity but also the patient’s experience,” said Keith Griffis, of Olympus Corporation of the Americas. “All of these benefits assist health care providers in improving clinical outcomes, reducing overall costs and enhancing quality of life for patients.”

Among display devices or content having horizontal resolution on the order of 4,000 pixels, the standard for UHD, 4K resolution is a generic term. Using horizontal resolution to characterize the technology deviates from prior definitions, which categorized media according to vertical resolution (1080i, 720p, 480p). 4K UHD has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HD format, with four times as many pixels overall.
