Software Designed for Diagnostic Medical Image Viewing on Android Devices Receives US Approval

Innovative new imaging software is making it possible for physicians to securely view patient images from a wide range of mobile devices and computers, collaborate with other clinicians, and generate high quality medical diagnosis from any location in real time.

Calgary Scientific, Inc. (Calgary, Canada) reported that it is providing mobile access to clinical data. Calgary Scientific is the first company to receive clearance from the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their ResolutionMD software, to diagnose medical images on Android devices. This FDA clearance provides physicians with the flexibility to make a successful diagnosis very rapidly, using the popular Android platform.

“This is a huge step forward in making advanced mobile healthcare applications available on a broader range of devices,” said Alec J. Megibow, MD, MPH, FACR, president, Society of Abdominal Radiology (Houston, TX, USA). “We see the market now beginning to understand the importance of mobile viewing solutions, which are playing an increasingly critical role in helping practitioners deliver better patient care and opening creative ways to deliver high level interactive educational content.”

The software is very sensitive; patient data are never transferred or retained on the device, as is the case with other mobile device imaging software. A Mayo Clinic (Rochester, NY, USA) 2012 study showed that radiologists using ResolutionMD Mobile instead of a conventional picture archiving and communication system (PACS) workstation were able to access computed tomography (CT) scans of stroke victims 24% faster saving an average of 11 minutes per patient. This is an important achievement since stroke diagnosis as every second counts in making a difference toward patient recovery.

“We are excited to deliver this clearance to the institutions that rely on ResolutionMD to improve patient care,” said Pierre Lemire, president and CTO of Calgary Scientific. “This is also an important advancement for our valued partners as their custom branded solutions will be added under the Calgary Scientific registration with the FDA.”

Calgary Scientific is the first company to receive FDA clearance for diagnostic image viewing on a variety of Android devices, including the highly popular Samsung Galaxy tab. “Our extensive validation process which involves both lab testing as well as comparative reads was built on the protocol we established with the FDA when we first obtained clearance for ResolutionMD Mobile on iOS,” said Kyle Peterson, director, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs of Calgary Scientific. ResolutionMD is also CE marked for distribution in Europe and licensed by Health Canada.

Calgary Scientific is a global leader in providing sophisticated medical imaging software and collaboration solutions, as well as web, mobility, and collaboration enablement technologies to industries looking for secure access to their data or graphics intensive applications.
