A leading medical imaging vendor is partnering with orthopedic and sports medicine specialists to develop a compact and affordable Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging system for imaging patient extremities.

The vendor will demonstrate the CBCT system, new software, and technology at the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM 2015) conference. The CBCT system is currently undergoing clinical studies and can capture images of knees, legs, feet, arms, and hands, and other extremities. The focus of the research is on the advantages of CBCT for the diagnosis and treatment of knee injuries.

The system can capture weight-bearing images of knees, legs and feet; and improve visualization of bone, and soft tissue. The CBCT system uses less radiation than existing Computed Tomography (CT) systems.

Carestream Health (Rochester, NY, USA), and Quantum Medical Imaging (Ronkonkoma, NY) a division of Carestream that designs and manufactures Digital Radiography (DR) and Computed Radiography (CR) medical radiographic systems, are together developing the CBCT technology.

Both companies also offer room-based digital radiography (DR) imaging systems, including fully integrated DR rooms with ceiling or floor-mounted systems, including wall stands and tables with integrated wireless DRX detectors for flexible positioning of patients during exams.

Another new DR hardware and software system developed by Quantum Medical is intended for general purpose radiography and includes a unique image processing system, and an innovative flat panel detector. Wireless data connectivity allows the DRX detectors to be shared within a facility with other DRX-based imaging systems.

Carestream also offers the ORTHOVIEW software intended to help surgeons perform preoperative orthopedic templating together with the Vue Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS).
