A leading global radiotherapy equipment provider has been awarded an eight-year tender to provide radiotherapy equipment and software for a network of five public hospitals in Galicia, in Northwest Spain.

The contract, worth approximately EUR 21 million, covers ten linear accelerators, a comprehensive suite of treatment planning software, and oncology information management systems. The systems will enable improved integration and knowledge-sharing between the five hospitals, increased efficiency and throughput, and provide better access to international innovation and research programs.

The contract was awarded to Varian Medical Systems (Palo Alto, CA, USA) by the SERGAS network of hospitals in Northwestern Spain and is the largest single order ever awarded to Varian in Spain. The deal will give cancer patients in the Centro Oncologico de Galicia, Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Santiago, Hospital Lucus Augusti de Lugo, Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Ourense, and Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Vigo hospitals in Northwest Spain access to advanced radiation therapy treatment. Varian Medical will install six advanced Clinac iX machines, three TrueBeam systems, a Unique system, and integrate the hospitals with Varian's ARIA network.

Dr. Rocio Mosquera, the Galician minister of health, said, "This long-term project is intended to increase patient access to advanced radiation therapy and increase efficiency and throughput at the five hospitals. By implementing such advanced treatment equipment and integrated software, it will also enable the networked hospitals to become more involved in international research and innovation programs."
