Dynamic Imaging Platform Adds Ultrasound Capability

By MedImaging International staff writers
Posted on 16 Oct 2018
A dynamic system combines ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies, providing a full suite of musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging at the point of care.

The Trice Medical (Trice; Malvern, PA, USA) mi-ultra is a high powered 15mHz handheld ultrasound transducer (available in both convex and linear offerings) that is enabled by the same technology as the Trice flagship product, the mi-eye 2, a handheld, disposable arthroscope that consists of a needle with an integrated camera and light source that allows surgeons to perform a full diagnostic arthroscopic or endoscopic procedure.

Both the mi-ultra and the mi-eye 2 have been optimized for MSK applications, and operate on the mi-tablet, a dedicated high definition (HD) tablet device with a 10.8” display powered by a 1.6GHz Intel atom processor. When using the mi-eye 2 and the mi-ultra, surgeons can both perform a diagnostic arthroscopy exam of the intra-articular space, and perform procedures using an integrated 19-gauge lumen catheter to inject or aspirate fluid during the procedure. At the conclusion of the procedure, everything is thrown into a sharps container.

“Today's healthcare environment is asking for innovation in a cost-effective manner. Trice is proud to have combined an arthroscopy tower and a high-powered ultrasound system into one simple, portable tablet,” said Mark Foster, President and CEO of Trice Medical. “The disposable mi-eye 2 camera is great to identify pathology within the joint, and the mi-ultra is a perfect complement for guided injections or assessing soft tissue damage outside of the joint. We believe the system is a ‘must have’ for every orthopedic practice.”

“The mi-ultra is a combination of the first MSK ultrasound system with sufficient image quality and reliability for all diagnostic and procedure indications with the first tablet based disposable office needle arthroscopy platform,” said orthopedic surgeon Don Buford, MD, founder of the Dallas PRP and Stem Cell Institute (TX, USA). “Now, every orthopedic clinician can have a single portable tablet for imaging intra-articular and extra-articular anatomy for diagnosis and procedures. This is a truly revolutionary point of care imaging system and the only such platform available!”
