A new flat panel detector (FPD) boasts light-weight design, built-in wireless communication, and uncompromising image quality.

The KA Imaging (Waterloo, Canada) Sight FPD weighs just 2.7 kilos (in its 38X46cm version) and 3.2 kilos in its 46X46cm version, making it ideal for multiple applications. Features include improved modulation transfer function (MTF) and detective quantum efficiency (DQE), and automatic exposure detection (AED) for use with any system. Two-second image transfer is achieved through a new antenna design which enables stronger Wi-Fi signal reception in any orientation, and wireless IEE 802.11ac compatibility that enables state-of-the-art transfer speed.

The Sight FPD also has a large onboard store capacity of about 300 images, with a 140 μm pixel size and a resolution of 2,500 X 3,052 pixels, and is available with either a Cesium Iodide (CsI) or Gadolinium oxysulfide (GOS) scintillator. Additional features include IPX6 rating for water resistance, and numerous built-in sensors--including temperature and tracking—that provide continuous monitoring of the FPD, even when it is powered off, in order to ensure proper panel storage and protection.

“Sight is a powerful and affordable solution in the medical and veterinary fields”, said Karim S Karim, CTO of KA Imaging. “It is a product that came to complement KA’s line of solutions, so we can better address the different needs of radiologists, considering both technological and financial aspects,” said Amol Karnick, President and CEO of KA Imaging.

CsI scintillators typically yield more detailed, higher resolution images, with a better light output. And since CsI panels are more sensitive to dose levels, the radiation dose is about 10% lower than in a GOS FPD. GOS FPDs, however, usually come with a lower price tag.
