A new mobile X-ray unit and high-definition flat panel detector (FPD) deliver a coordinated imaging solution for greater efficiency and optimal image quality.

The Konica Minolta Healthcare (Wayne, NJ, USA) mKDR Xpress Mobile X- ray System features a collapsing column and swivel arm that provide a full range of motion that enables imaging at the bedside, intensive care unit (ICU), and more, by maximizing visibility and positioning without sacrificing clinical utility. Features include power drive and manual rotation, with detents on 30, 60, 90 and 120 degrees, a collapsible column, and ±90° tube rotation; a customizable mobile-specific user interface with remote control; front and back six blade collimator controls with laser alignment; and accessory rails for cones, filters, and dose area product (DAP).

Paired to the mKDR Xpress Mobile X- ray System is the new AeroDR 35X43 cm FPD, which captures digital images in seconds. When combined with proprietary Ultra imaging software that is modified for mobile use, detailed bone and soft-tissue images are provided from a single exposure. Designed for all general X-ray applications, it is made of space-age carbon material infused with antibacterial technology. Both systems were introduced at the 2021 annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

“The mKDR Xpress Mobile X-ray System and AeroDR Carbon Flat Panel Detector were designed with the future in mind, to help clinicians imagine more possibilities of what a portable X-ray and with a high-definition detector can do at the point of care,” said Guillermo Sander, marketing director of digital radiography at Konica Minolta Healthcare. “When combined, … [they] deliver a synchronized imaging solution that expand the capabilities of radiography with an intelligent platform and simplified operation.”

The High Definition FPD is based on a 100µ a Cesium Iodide (CsI) scintillator that quadruples image resolution to provide more detail of small structures. In addition, realism image processing enhances sharpness and contrast while keeping the natural granularity of the structures, like tubercular bone, even under magnification. In addition, high dynamic range aggregates the data from four adjacent pixels to give a wider range of grays between all black and all white pixels to help discern subtle differences in soft tissue.
