A phased implementation of a new information technology (IT) program in Germany is planned with a deployment of more than 80 million electronic health insurance cards with the initial phase ensuring that all card readers are certified, enabling the cards to be read for invoicing purposes.

Carestream Health (Rochester, New York, NY, USA) is amongst the first healthcare companies to be awarded the KBV Certificate "eGK-Release-0” as part of the initial rollout of the electronic healthcare card to be used in Germany.

The Federal National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians awarded the certificate for the Carestream radiology information system (RIS) software. Certification confirms that the software is compliant with the overall program specification and fulfills all requirements for the secure handling of patient insurance data.

The new electronic healthcare card (eGK) is set to replace the existing health insurance card (KVK), as stipulated by the Federal Government. In addition to the new healthcare card, service providers will require new card readers and also, at a later date, a connection to an online medical network.

"This early certification of our Carestream RIS software highlights our commitment to giving our customers the highest possible level of application security when they use our products and systems within their IT environment,” said Wolfgang Menrad, managing director for Carestream Health in Germany.
