Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (Palo Alto, CA, USA) has been named number 14 in the BusinessWeek 50 listing for 2007, the magazine's ranking of the United States' best-performing large public corporations in the Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500-stock index.

"Varian is honored to be included in the BusinessWeek 50,” said Timothy Guertin, president and CEO, Varian. "To be referred to as a smaller company ‘playing at the top of their game,' and maintaining a high level of global market share through ‘management excellence, marketing muscle, and innovation' is a tremendous affirmation of our efforts. We are proud to be recognized in this way.”

According to the magazine, "the BusinessWeek 50 represents our choice of the ‘best in class' from the 10 economic sectors that make up the S&P 500. These star performers in the class of 2007 are setting the agenda in their industries. This year's list is chock full of companies that are rewriting the rules in their industries. They are the agitators, the pioneers, and the game-changers that are leading the way in the 21st century.”

BusinessWeek used an advanced method for ranking the companies, mainly emphasizing performance on core financial measures, but also considering companies' performance compared with similar companies and other performance indicators. The resulting list, with information about each of the companies, can be viewed on the BusinessWeek website, or in the March 26, 2007, issue of the magazine.
