Definiens (Munich, Germany), an enterprise image intelligence company, and Hamamatsu Photonics (Hamamatsu City, Japan), a leading manufacturer of devices for the generation and measurement of infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light, recently signed a partnership agreement for the European market.

Under the terms of the sales and marketing agreement, Hamamatsu and Definiens will integrate Definiens image analysis platforms--Definiens Enterprise Image Intelligence Suite and Definiens XD including Definiens TissueMap--with Hamamatsu's NanoZoomer digital pathology system (NDP), a product range for virtual microscopy. The NanoZoomer scans tissue or cellular slides at remarkable speed and generates digital images with very high image quality. It creates digital slides that can be shared and viewed over a network. Definiens comprehensive image analysis platforms extract context-based data from any digital image in any dimension--be it two-dimensional (2D), 3D, or 4D.

Definiens image analysis platforms are a perfect match to Hamamatsu's NanoZoomer. The partnership will generate additional benefit for customers by integrating a sophisticated tissue slide scanner, capable of high throughput, sensitivity, and resolution with a unique image analysis technology that emulates human cognitive processes to automatically extract intelligence from digital images.

Life science and crop science research institutes as well as the pharmaceutical industry will benefit from a complete and fully integrated image analysis solution, which is closing the loop from high-end image acquisition to high-content and high-throughput image analysis.

"By partnering with Hamamatsu we can provide our joint customers with a complete image analysis solution, which enables them to automate image analysis processes, reduce costs, and make qualified decisions faster,” remarked Manfred Voglmaier, vice president Business Development Life Sciences at Definiens.

"Hamamatsu's NanoZoomer is a high-throughput slide scanning system with excellent image quality that--in combination with Definiens powerful image analysis software--enables histologists, pharmacologists, and pathologists to get more reliable and reproducible image analysis results,” added Dr. Erk Mennenga-Klopp, head of the medical solutions department at Hamamatsu, Germany.

Both companies will offer active marketing and sales support including training and consultancy. In addition, Definiens will provide application specialists and specific algorithm development for Hamamatsu's customer base.

Hamamatsu Photonics is a manufacturer of optronics (optoelectronic) components and systems. The company stresses the advancement of photonics through extensive research and development. The component and system products such as photosensors, cameras, and complex systems are widely used in different research fields such as communication, biomedical science, material science, pharmacology, medical science, and many others.

By automating image analysis on an enterprise level, Definiens supports life science organizations to analyze and interpret vast numbers of images accurately and consistently. Definiens improves the measurement of cell assays, the examination of tissue samples, and the interpretation of noninvasive imaging, enabling high-content screening, digital pathology, and translational medicine.

Definiens is a company focused on analyzing and interpreting images on every scale, from microscopic cell structures to satellite images. The Definiens Cognition Network Technology, developed by Nobel laureate Prof. Gerd Binnig and his team, is a sophisticated and context-based technology designed to fulfill the image analysis requirements of the life and earth sciences markets. The technology is modeled on the powerful human cognitive perception processes to extract intelligence from images.
