The right to distribute a new 1.5 T torso array coil for use with magnetic resonance (MR) technology has been granted to Medrad, Inc. (Indianola, PA, USA) by W.L. Gore & Associates, the developer. The coil is designed to enhance the diagnostic images of the chest, abdominal, and pelvic regions provided by MR.

Coils are specially designed to accommodate different body parts, and include antennae that work wiith the MR magnet to produce a clear image. The new Gore 1.5 T Torso Array coil is compatible with all phased array versions of the Signa MR systems of GE Medical Ssytems. Improved signal-to-noise ratios deliver a higher resolution image than is possible with a traditional body coil.

A phased array design--with two coils in the front and two in the back--enables pictures of the body to be taken from different angles at the same time, for enhanced diagnosis. The coils are housed in a flexible outer Gore-Tex jacket that conforms to the area being scanned. The Torso Array also delivers detailed images of the prostate and pelvis when connected to Medrad's MRInnervu products with Medrad's ADT-Torso interface. The combination provides the detail available from a small field of view and the coverage required from a large field of view.

Medrad is a leaading supplier of aancillary devices for MRI. "The MR technology continues to evolve, aaand we're evolving right along with it,” says John P. Friel, president and CEO of Medrad.
