A web-based picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) provides a full range of advanced features designed for orthopedic applications.

Viztek (Jacksonville, FL, USA) presented the Opal-Ortho PACS, designed for the orthopedic market, at the 2009 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting, held February 2009 in Las Vegas, NV, USA. Opal-Ortho PACS is the orthopedic counterpart to the enterprise level, web-based family of Opal PACS solutions. Opal-Ortho features the same advanced tools as the original Opal-RAD PACS, in addition to specialized features for the orthopedic surgeon.

Orthopedic practices of all sizes can benefit from the easy-to-use interface, allowing for rapid integration into practice workflow. The software features a preoperative planning module and tools including integrated templating, distance and angle measurements, and spine labeling. Moreover, Opal-Ortho easily integrates with most electronic medical record (EMR) platforms. VP of sales, Steve Deaton explained, "Opal-Ortho offers fully web-based functionality with tools designed with the help of orthopedic surgeons specifically for this market. The highly specialized software dramatically reduces the number of clicks it takes the doctor to complete most common daily tasks.”

The most recent Opal-Ortho installation at Dr. Jeremy Stern's orthopedic practice in North Dartmouth, MA, USA, was bundled with Viztek's advanced U-Arm digital radiography (DR) system. The software coupled with the excellent DR technology offers the practice workflow enhancements as well as significant improvements of image quality. Practice manager, Karen Scott said, "The addition of Viztek's Opal-Ortho PACS and U-Arm DR has completely changed the way the practice functions. Our efficiency has increased tremendously and we are extremely pleased with the image quality the DR provides.”

Viztek is a provider of complete digital software and hardware imaging systems, backed by comprehensive training and support. The company's Opal-RAD PACS and radiology information system (RIS) suite provides a cost-effective connectivity and functionality. Web-based architecture, with ultra-fast image streaming, ensures timely, efficient communications throughout the enterprise and beyond with both sophisticated computed radiography (CR) and DR technology.

Viztek's line of systems has addressed the needs of radiologists, with special emphasis on the small- to medium-hospital market, as well as medical specialists from orthopedists to chiropractors and podiatrists.
