New 3D Software Unveiled for High-Resolution Breast Imaging

A new software package, that augments an existing high-resolution transverse imaging system intended for early detection of breast cancer, has been unveiled.

The imaging system was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA; Silver Spring, MD USA) and can be used with any standard ultrasound machine to scan the whole breast and the adjacent lymph nodes and underarm (axilla).

SonoCiné (Reno, NV, USA) developed the Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound (AWBUS) high-resolution transverse imaging system, and the new 3D MPR software to provide radiologists with an automated screening tool for early detection of breast cancer in dense breast tissue. The system can help clinicians detect tumors as small as 5 mm and can highlight areas of concern. The 3D MPR software provides high-resolution transverse, sagittal and coronal views.

Board-certified radiologist Dr. A. Thomas Stavros, said, "Studies have shown that using the native transverse acquisition plane image is more reliable in detecting both benign and malignant masses. However, the coronal view is an added method to visualize the lesion once it has been detected, confirm its existence, distinguish it from artifact, and is particularly good for showing spiculation and architectural distortion in malignant masses. This allows for a more thorough investigation of potential lesions, which can dramatically improve diagnostic abilities. The fact that we're adding on to existing ultrasound systems is far more cost effective for health care providers, who don't have to invest in dedicated systems or purchase additional ultrasound units. This works with what they already have in their centers."
